The patient is unresponsive, pale, cool to touch, and diaphoretic. He has a history of diabetes.
The most common causes of such symptoms are hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. These conditions cause the patient’s blood sugar to be either too high or too low. The patient has a history of diabetes so we should suspect hyperglycemia in this case.
Hypoglycemic episodes may also produce similar symptoms including: confusion, hunger, shakiness and lightheadedness. Hypoglycemic episodes result from the body’s inability to produce enough insulin or from not eating enough glucose-rich foods throughout the day.
